Photosystem II D1 Repair
In full sunlight a chloroplast runs Photosystem II, splitting water while the D1 protein at the reactive centre is destroyed by the photochemistry it enables—photo-oxidative damage on a timescale of roughly thirty minutes. Photosynthetic capacity persists only while the cell continuously synthesises, transports, inserts, and activates replacement D1 subunits. Unlike the dust grain's mechanically reliable environmental inscription, this Witness is metabolically maintained: the Canon compresses variation through gene expression, chaperone-assisted folding, and repair targeting. What is maintained is the photosynthetic closure and its regulatory depth. Payment is kcal/day in repair and replacement throughput—a biological currency incommensurable with W/K scattering costs. If repair lags damage, photodamage accumulates, repair fails, ROS cascades propagate, and thylakoid architecture compromises along the organism's own maintenance topology. Failure is characteristic propagation, not undifferentiated decay.
kcal/day / metabolic repair cost
Photodamage accumulation → repair failure → ROS cascade → thylakoid compromise
