Four walls are not one wall

A finite observer can learn reliably without occupying a total standpoint. The box keeps structural limits separate from operational invoices.

All control values and viable-band thresholds are illustrative dimensionless proxies. Landauer's principle is used only for logically irreversible information processing, not as a universal conversion of every physical cost into bit erasure.

The box separates Chapter 2's embedding, diagonal, reflexive, and measurement arguments and preserves the stated residual permissions of each.

Text-only Demon Box

A finite observer can operate without becoming total.

The schematic varies tracked variables, spatial and temporal resolution, reusable memory, and cooling. Its levels are illustrative categories, not measurements or a conversion into physical wattage.

Szilard-stage cycle

  1. Partition. Declare the box, its interface, and which differences count.
  2. Acquire. Sample the declared variables through finite spatial and temporal resolution.
  3. Identify. Store and classify a state before the opportunity for action closes.
  4. Feed back. Use the classification to intervene through the same embedded interface.
  5. Erase. Return memory to a reusable condition and export the reset burden.

Four walls

Embedding wall

Blocks: A view from nowhere that omits the demon's substrate, interface, and energy path.

Still permits: Local measurement and control from an explicitly declared position inside the setup.

Diagonal wall

Blocks: A complete predictor that remains correct when applied without restriction to itself.

Still permits: Bounded prediction over a fixed domain with stated exclusions and failure cases.

Reflexive wall

Blocks: Treating observation and intervention as inert additions that never alter the observed regime.

Still permits: Feedback models that include the observer's coupling and revise after intervention.

Measurement wall

Blocks: Discriminations finer or faster than the declared interface can acquire.

Still permits: Coarse-grained distinctions whose spatial and temporal limits are carried into the claim.

Five invoices

  1. Acquisition invoice: Sampling declared differences at the chosen grain and cadence. No state enters the box for free; the interface and sampling act are part of the account.
  2. Feedback invoice: Closing the loop quickly enough for a classification to guide action. An intervention spends the window in which the measured state remains actionable.
  3. Identification invoice: Retaining enough distinctions to classify a state rather than merely detect change. A label requires memory and an explicit error-bearing identification rule.
  4. Modularity invoice: Keeping the declared subsystem and its variables separable from ignored couplings. The box boundary is a maintained modeling decision, not a view from outside the world.
  5. Erasure invoice: Returning finite memory to a reusable condition. Reset exports a burden; this schematic does not convert it into watts or a universal numeric floor.

Embedding wall

The observer is physically inside the world it measures. This blocks a costless view from nowhere, while still permitting local calibrated observation.

Diagonal wall

No fixed descriptive repertoire guarantees capture of every novelty expressible against it. This blocks final vocabulary, while still permitting revision and extension.

Reflexive wall

The observer cannot fully include its own current operation without changing the operation represented. This blocks simultaneous exhaustive self-description, while still permitting staged self-audit.

Measurement wall

Resolution requires interaction, calibration, memory, and a bounded response time. This blocks arbitrary precision at zero footprint, while still permitting task-relative measurement.

Five invoices

Acquisition, feedback, identification, modularity, and erasure are separately named so the bill cannot be hidden in one generic heat animation.
